Bosch has teamed up with Tastemade to turn your fridge from unforgettable, to farmer’s market fresh with these three food sourcing tips during your next grocery trip.
Tip 1 | Shop Local
Shop at your local farmer’s market, and don’t be afraid to ask questions, like ‘where is this produce from’, and ‘when was it picked’. Don’t have a farmer’s market locally? Visit your local grocer and talk to the employees in the produce section to learn more. Often times, grocery store produce employees will offer a sample, allowing you to taste a new item, or something that is in season and particularly tasty.
Tip 2 | The Perfect Pick
Strawberries
• When selecting the perfect strawberry, keep an eye-out for inconsistencies in color and texture. A translucent or white halo along the top near the stem means the strawberry is not ripe yet. Avoid brown spots as they are a sign of a spore rot.
Fig
• When selecting the perfect fig, avoid figs that are still green, as they still need more time to ripen to their robust dark color.
Peaches
• When selecting the perfect peach, avoid soft spots and bruises. You want a medium firm peach that will ripen up in the next few days, depending on when you plan to eat it.
Melons
• When selecting the perfect watermelon, look for a cream color ground spot, that indicates your melon is ripe. Try knocking on the watermelon, if you hear a thud you know it’s ripe and ready to enjoy! Honeydew melons should be solid in a golden hue. When picking the perfect cantaloupe, try pressing your thumb into the melon. If it leaves a dent, it’s over-ripe, so keep looking for a firmer cantaloupe.
Tip 3 | Selecting for the Season
Selecting the best produce for each season is key to enjoying your food at peak ripeness and flavor. See some recommendations below for the best produce to select for each season.
Fall
• Grapes, figs, apples, pomegranate
Winter
• Clementines, papaya, mandarins, kiwi
Spring
• Cantaloupe, apricot, raspberries, honeydew, white cherries
Summer
• Lemons, limes, watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, mango
